Cranfield University Technology Park’s new season of breakfast business seminars kicked off on the 5 March with a lively panel debate on the challenges, opportunities and priorities for marketing small businesses in 2014.

With nearly 5m small businesses contributing to 40% of UK turnover, the importance of SMEs to broader economic growth – and especially in the Milton Keynes and Bedford regions – means that businesses need a clear approach to developing and promoting their ideas.

  • Marketing is about more than just promoting your business. It is fundamental to how your develop your product, identify your audience and sell your ideas
  • Make sure a marketing mentality runs trhoughout your whole company – from your offices to your email style. Devise a plan and ensure your whole team knows their role in it
  • Constantly research and evaluate your cutomer base to make sure you understand their business and priorities
  • Take advantage of advice and funding schemes such as The Department of Business, Innovation & Skill’s Growth Accelerator programme and the SEMLEP-led Grants4Growth
  • Learn from others by joining business forums, attending events and networking
  • Some of the best tools to promote your business are free such as press releases and social media, but also remember these take time and resource
  • Don’t be afraid to try new tactics and tools to promote your business, and learn from your mistakes

About the events
Cranfield University Technology Park’s free business seminars are designed to suit the needs of growing businesses in the Milton Keynes and Bedfordshire, with topics ranging from finance and business development to apprenticeship programmes.

The events which include a networking breakfast are hosted in the Cranfield Innovation Centre offices’ conferencing suite and are open to all.

The events are delivered in partnership with Cranfield University, South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP) and Central Bedfordshire Council.
